The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the 34th edition of Africa’s most prestigious international football tournament. This year’s AFCON will be hosted by the Ivory Coast with the opening game taking place on January 13th.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Final will be played on February 11th in the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé, Ivory Coast.

Morocco have been drawn in Group F of the 2023 African Cup of Nations. They are joined in the group by two-time winners of the event DR Congo (1968 and 1974), 2012 Champions Zambia and Tanzania who have never been beyond the Group Stage of this tournament.
Morocco are expected to make light work of their group currently priced at 2/5 to win Group F with DR Congo 9/2, Zambia 6/1 and Tanzania 11/1.

Star Player – Achraf Hakimi
Morocco are fortunate to have arguably the best and inarguably one of the best right-backs in the world with PSG star Achraf Hakimi (25) who has already represented his nation 68 times and scored 8 goals since making his debut in 2016.
Hakimi is a right back who has every tool needed in his locker, his 8.20 Progressive Passes Per 90 is in the 99th percentile for all full backs but he is also a gifted dribbler with his 3.64 Progressive Carries Per 90 in the 93rd percentile for all full backs.
It’s not just going forward, he is also a strong defender with his 1.12 Interceptions and 1.39 Blocks per 90 in the 71st and 75th percentile respectively, all the more impressive when you consider he is usually in a dominant PSG side.
Breakout Star – Bilal El Khannous
Arguably Morocco’s brightest footballing talent at the moment, the 19-year-old creative attacking midfielder who plays his club football with Genk in Belgium has already been capped 7 times by his country and has seen him linked with European Elite like Liverpool and Man City.
Players often find big transfers on the back of tournament football. Could this man be the breakout star of the tournament?

Star Player – Sadio Mane
The leading player for this Senegalese side will be no strangers to followers of European and English Football on any level, former Liverpool and Bayern Munich winger/forward Sadio Mane (31) who in 101 games for his country has 40 goals making them their record goalscorer.
He is also second on their All-Time appearances list with 101 games only 6 behind Idrissa Gueye who is also in the squad and is on 107 appearances for his national team. Mane despite piling his trade in the Saudi League now remains a World Class winger with his Expected Assists 0.37 in the 99th percentile and 7.94 Attacking Penalty Touches in the 98th percentile for all forwards.
Breakout Star – Nicolas Jackson
Senegal has one of the most finely balanced squads in the tournament with a solid mix of youth and experience sprinkled across their squad. However, the player for me to watch is Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson (22) who has only 6 caps to his name so far and 0 goals.
Jackson is a striker with ability but has found it tough to get about the goals with Chelsea so far this season. While he is likely to start on the bench, if he can get a few sub-goals early, he could break into the starting line-up.

Star Player – Sebastien Haller
What a story it has been for Haller!, the former West Ham and Ajax striker was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022 but eventually overcame it and returned to professional football in January 2023.
Now with Dortmund, he has struggled with an Ankle Injury and so from 14 games, 450 minutes he has 2 goals this season. However, if he can find his feet again in this tournament he could add considerably to his 8 goals in 21 games for his country!
Who would begrudge him that comeback story?
Breakout Star – Simon Adingra
The Brighton winger (22) only received his first call-up to his nation last March and in his 4 games since has 1 goal. For Brighton this season in 23 games he has 5 goals and 3 assists and if he could continue this form in the African Cup of Nations he will be a dangerous customer.
Simon’s a strong dribbler and provides his team with brilliant defensive contributions also.

The former Man City attacker is Captain of his nation and boasts an impressive 91 caps, putting him fourth on their appearance list, his 31 goals put him third on their record goalscorer list also.
When on form few footballers have his level of technical ability and his chance creation his 0.61 Assists Per 90 are in the 99th percentile for all attackers and his 5.24 shot-creating actions are in the 91st percentile.
Algeria are a team that struggles to score goals, but if Mahrez can play the way he can at the tournament, they remain major players for success.
Breakout Star – Farès Chaïbi
The Algerian squad primarily consists of players in their peak or advancing years, so it’s more difficult to pinpoint a breakout star from their squad. However, the Frankfurt midfielder/winger (21) could be the man to watch after making his debut in 2023 he already has 9 caps and 2 goals.

Rigobert Song – They’ve been managed by Rigobert Song since 2022. However, he has underwhelmed so far with a record of 7 wins, 8 draws and 8 defeats with a win rate of 30.43%. Could this tournament be the catalyst or the death of his tenure? Time will tell.
Players to Watch
Star Player – André Onana
The Man United shot-stopper hasn’t had the start to life that he would’ve wanted but remains a high-quality keeper, both with his feet and his hands. The ironic thing is when the club first signed him he had “retired” from International Duty due to a dispute over his style of play which saw him walk away from the squad during the 2022 World Cup.
However, he was recalled in August and played in September announcing his intention to play International Football again. The club, player and country, arranged that he would join the squad later than the rest of the squad so he could play more.
I’m still not sure if all is rosy still between the player and the Cameroon manager
Breakout Star – Nathan Wilfired Doualla
The teenager has yet to be capped by his country and still piles his trade in Cameroon with Victoria United one of 2 home-based talents in the squad and is set to be the youngest player in the tournament.
Whether the young, distinctive central midfielder gets minutes this tournament remains to be seen but he may get an appearance or two off the bench!
