To Reach Semi-Finals – 13/8

To Reach The Final – 11/4

Top Goalscorer – Youssef En Nesyri – 9/1

How Morocco Qualified For AFCON

Morocco qualified for the tournament by topping Group K with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss and 9 points from their 4 games against South Africa and Liberia.

They scored 8 goals in those matches while conceding 3 goals.

Head Coach

Walid Regraugui – They’ve been managed by Walid Regraugui since 2022 and he has already guided them to a fourth finish at the 2022 World Cup, making it the best performance by an African or Arab side to get that far in the competition. From his 18 games in charge, he has a win ratio of 50%

Players to Watch

Star Player – Achraf Hakimi

Morocco are fortunate to have arguably the best and inarguably one of the best right-backs in the world with PSG star Achraf Hakimi (25) who has already represented his nation 68 times and scored 8 goals since making his debut in 2016.

Hakimi is a right back who has every tool needed in his locker, his 8.20 Progressive Passes Per 90 is in the 99th percentile for all full backs but he is also a gifted dribbler with his 3.64 Progressive Carries Per 90 in the 93rd percentile for all full backs.

It’s not just going forward, he is also a strong defender with his 1.12 Interceptions and 1.39 Blocks per 90 in the 71st and 75th percentile respectively, all the more impressive when you consider he is usually in a dominant PSG side.

Breakout Star – Bilal El Khannous

Arguably Morocco’s brightest footballing talent at the moment, the 19-year-old creative attacking midfielder who plays his club football with Genk in Belgium has already been capped 7 times by his country and has seen him linked with European Elite like Liverpool and Man City.

Players often find big transfers on the back of tournament football. Could this man be the breakout star of the tournament?

Senegal (Defending Champions)

World Ranking: 20th

AFCON Titles: 1

Senegal are the 2nd favourites to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at odds of 9/2 according to the latest football odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that the side has a 18.2% chance of retaining their title.

Senegal’s African Cup of Nations Group Odds

Senegal has been drawn in Group C of the 2023 African Cup of Nations. They are joined in the group by five-time winners of the event Cameroon (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017), 1976 runners-up Guinea and 2021 Quarter Finalists Gambia.

Senegal are 2/7 favourites to win the group following their opening group victory 3-0 over Gambia.

Closest challengers Cameroon are priced at 13/8. Guinea are priced at 7/2 to win this following their opening 1-1 Guinea who can be gotten at 10/1 for the group. Gambia round off the betting at 50/1.

Senegal’s African Cup of Nations Selected Specials

To Reach Quarter-Finals – 8/15

To Reach Semi-Finals – 5/4

To Reach The Final – 11/4

Top Goalscorer –Sadio Mane – 8/1

Winner/ Top Goalscorer Double – Senegal + Sadio Mane – 16/1

How Senegal Qualified

Senegal qualified for the tournament by topping Group L with an unbeaten record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 14 points from their 6 games against Mozambique, Benin and Rwanda. They scored 12 goals from matches conceding only 4 goals.

Head Coach

Aliou Cissé – They’ve been managed by Aliou Cissé since 2014 and he has already guided them to an AFCON runner-up finish in 2019 before winning the competition for the first time in 2021 across his 125 games in charge he has a win ratio of 59.20%

Players to Watch

Star Player – Sadio Mane

The leading player for this Senegalese side will be no strangers to followers of European and English Football on any level, former Liverpool and Bayern Munich winger/forward Sadio Mane (31) who in 101 games for his country has 40 goals making them their record goalscorer.

He is also second on their All-Time appearances list with 101 games only 6 behind Idrissa Gueye who is also in the squad and is on 107 appearances for his national team. Mane despite piling his trade in the Saudi League now remains a World Class winger with his Expected Assists 0.37 in the 99th percentile and 7.94 Attacking Penalty Touches in the 98th percentile for all forwards.

Breakout Star – Nicolas Jackson

Senegal has one of the most finely balanced squads in the tournament with a solid mix of youth and experience sprinkled across their squad. However, the player for me to watch is Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson (22) who has only 6 caps to his name so far and 0 goals.

Jackson is a striker with ability but has found it tough to get about the goals with Chelsea so far this season. While he is likely to start on the bench, if he can get a few sub-goals early, he could break into the starting line-up.

Could this tournament give him the confidence boost he needs right now?

Senegal AFCON Squad

Goalkeepers: Edouard Mendy (Al-Ahli), Mory Diaw (Clermont), Seny Dieng (Middlesbrough)

Defenders: Youssouf Sabaly (Real Betis), Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal), Moussa Niakhate (Nottingham Forest), Abdou Diallo (Al Arabi), Formose Mendy (Lorient), Abdoulaye Ndiaye (Troyes), Abdoulaye Seck (Maccabi Haifa), Fode Ballo-Toure (Fulham), Ismail Jakobs (Monaco)

Ivory Coast (Host)

World Ranking: 49th

AFCON Titles: 2

Tournament hosts Ivory Coast have been given odds of 13/2 to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Those odds suggest that the side have a 15.4% chance of success in the tournament.

Ivory Coast’s AFCON Group Odds

Ivory Coast are 1/3 favourites for Group A following their 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria following their 1-1 draw against Eqautorial Guinea can be gotten at 5/2 while the latter can be gotten at 20/1. Guinea-Bissau round off the betting at 40/1.

Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations Selected Specials

To Reach Quarter-Finals – 4/6

To Reach Semi-Finals – 7/4

To Reach The Final – 7/2

Top Goalscorer –Sebastien Haller – 12/1

Winner/ Top Goalscorer Double – Ivory Coast + Sebastien Haller – 25/1

How Ivory Coast Qualified

Ivory Coast qualified for the tournament as hosts along with coming runners-up in Group H with a record of 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat against Zambia, Comoros and Lesotho only losing out of the top by goal difference two goals worse than Zambia. They scored 9 goals in those matches conceding 5 goals.

Head Coach

Jean-Louis Gasset – They’ve been managed by Jean-Louis Gasset since May 2022 and he has earned his side a win rate of 64.29% across his 14 matches at the helm with 9 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats.

Players to Watch

Star Player – Sebastien Haller

What a story it has been for Haller!, the former West Ham and Ajax striker was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022 but eventually overcame it and returned to professional football in January 2023.

Now with Dortmund, he has struggled with an Ankle Injury and so from 14 games, 450 minutes he has 2 goals this season. However, if he can find his feet again in this tournament he could add considerably to his 8 goals in 21 games for his country!

Who would begrudge him that comeback story?

Breakout Star – Simon Adingra

The Brighton winger (22) only received his first call-up to his nation last March and in his 4 games since has 1 goal. For Brighton this season in 23 games he has 5 goals and 3 assists and if he could continue this form in the African Cup of Nations he will be a dangerous customer.

Simon’s a strong dribbler and provides his team with brilliant defensive contributions also.

Ivory Coast AFCON Squad

Algeria

World Ranking: 30th

AFCON Titles: 2

Algeria have been given odds of 10/1 to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Those odds suggest that the side has a 9.1% chance of success in the tournament.

Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations Group Odds

Two-time winners Algeria (1990 and 2019) have been drawn in Group D of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. They are joined in the group by 2013 runner-up Burkina Faso, Mauritania who have never been beyond the Group Stage and Angolo who reached the Quarter Final in 2008 and 2010.

Algeria are currently priced at 2/5 to win Group D following their opening 1-1 draw against Angola who are priced at 10/1  to win the Group.

Burkina Faso and Mauritania who are both yet to play are priced at 3/1 and 12/1 respectively.

Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations Selected Specials

Head Coach

Djamel Belmadi – They’ve been managed by Djamel Belmadi since 2018 and he guided them to a runner-up finish at AFCON 2019. From his 59 games in charge, he has a win ratio of 66.1%

Players to Watch

Star Player – Riyad Mahrez

The former Man City attacker is Captain of his nation and boasts an impressive 91 caps, putting him fourth on their appearance list, his 31 goals put him third on their record goalscorer list also.

When on form few footballers have his level of technical ability and his chance creation his 0.61 Assists Per 90 are in the 99th percentile for all attackers and his 5.24 shot-creating actions are in the 91st percentile.

Algeria are a team that struggles to score goals, but if Mahrez can play the way he can at the tournament, they remain major players for success.

Breakout Star – Farès Chaïbi

The Algerian squad primarily consists of players in their peak or advancing years, so it’s more difficult to pinpoint a breakout star from their squad. However, the Frankfurt midfielder/winger (21) could be the man to watch after making his debut in 2023 he already has 9 caps and 2 goals.

Watch out for his work rate. Positional awareness and his shooting technique.

Cameroon

World Ranking: 46th

AFCON Titles: 5

Cameroon have gone from odds of 12/1 to win the 2023 African Cup of Nations to 14/1. Those odds suggest that the side has an 6.7% chance of winning this tournament.

Cameroon’s African Cup of Nations Group Odds

Five-time winners Cameroon (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017) have been drawn into Group C of the 2023 African Cup of Nations. They are joined in the group by three-time winners Nigeria (1980, 1994 and 2013), Equatorial Guinea who finished fourth in 2015 and Guinea-Bissau who have never been beyond the Group Stage.

Cameroon are seen as the second most likely team to win Group A at 7/2 following their opening 1-1 draw against Guinea who are 10/1 to win the group

Senegal are group favourites at 2/7 after their 2-0 win over Gambia who are now not seen to stand much chance  priced at 50/1.

How Cameroon Qualified

Cameroon qualified for the tournament by topping Group C with a record of 2 wins and 1 draw, giving them a total of 7 points in their group with Nambia and Burundi. They scored 6 goals in those matches conceding 3 goals.

Head Coach

Rigobert Song – They’ve been managed by Rigobert Song since 2022. However, he has underwhelmed so far with a record of 7 wins, 8 draws and 8 defeats with a win rate of 30.43%. Could this tournament be the catalyst or the death of his tenure? Time will tell.

Players to Watch

Star Player – André Onana

The Man United shot-stopper hasn’t had the start to life that he would’ve wanted but remains a high-quality keeper, both with his feet and his hands. The ironic thing is when the club first signed him he had “retired” from International Duty due to a dispute over his style of play which saw him walk away from the squad during the 2022 World Cup.

However, he was recalled in August and played in September announcing his intention to play International Football again. The club, player and country, arranged that he would join the squad later than the rest of the squad so he could play more.

I’m still not sure if all is rosy still between the player and the Cameroon manager

Breakout Star – Nathan Wilfired Doualla

The teenager has yet to be capped by his country and still piles his trade in Cameroon with Victoria United one of 2 home-based talents in the squad and is set to be the youngest player in the tournament.

Whether the young, distinctive central midfielder gets minutes this tournament remains to be seen but he may get an appearance or two off the bench!
